Program Summary:

Innovations for Learning (IFL), a national nonprofit, is committed to improving literacy outcomes in under-resourced schools by connecting the classroom to the community.

Without the basic skill of reading, research shows students are more likely to struggle throughout their school years, drop out and become trapped in the criminal justice system. IFL provides educators with an array of innovative resources to substantially improve reading skills in underperforming schools.

IFL’s flagship program, TutorMate, offers a unique opportunity for local volunteers to help students practice reading through weekly, online sessions. The consistent connection with a nurturing and friendly tutor not only helps students reach grade-level literacy, but also fosters self-esteem, confidence and an excitement for reading.

With the support of corporations and businesses, TutorMate has seen 5,000 volunteers participate in its mission to help improve students’ early literacy. Volunteers connect with their students each week for a 30-minute, remote reading session.
