Program Name: One Day Without Shoes

Program Summary:

One Day Without Shoes is an annual event Cornhusker Bank has organized for the benefit of the People’s City Mission in Lincoln, Nebraska. It is a two week event held every April for collection of new or used shoes to donate to the mission for distribution of used footwear and for the People’s City Mission to sell shoes which are unwearable for the recyclable materials. Cornhusker Bank organizes organizations and schools throughout the area to collect the shoes. The second Tuesday of each April, the bank hosts a day that we lead a walk from a bank site to one of the Mission’s sites to raise awareness of the need for shoes in our community. The entire community is invited to walk and anyone walking is provided with lunch. During the two week period, paper “barefeet” are also available for citizens and customers to donate to purchase, with the funds collected also going to the mission so they can purchase new shoes needed in special sizes which are not usually donated. Cornhusker Bank does all the promotion for this two week event. After all shoes have been collected, bank staff, and school groups donate their time and energy help sort the shoes before distribution begins. This is an event which unites area businesses, and individuals for a common cause which benefits the community and improves its quality of life.
