Entry Year: 2018
Entry Category: Financial Education
Asset Size: Small
Program Name: Teach Kids to Save

Program Summary:

For the last 11 years during the month of April, myself and the President of Community State Bank have visited the Community Elementary School 2nd grade classes and presented a Teach Kids to Save program. The President of the bank reads a book entitled "Rock, Brock and the Savings Shock" written by former FDIC Chairman, Sheila Bair. Using a PowerPoint so the kids can follow along, the book tells the story of Rock who loved to spend his money and his twin brother, Brock, who saved his money and how their grandpa taught them a valuable lesson about saving money. We hold a drawing for $2 bills for each of the 6 classes. Like the grandfather in the book, if the kids bring in the $2 and either deposit in their new or existing savings account, we match their deposit up to $2. We also had drawings for little piggy banks with a quarter in them. We also give away a "Saving is Fun" color/activity book with a box of crayons. We then ask them to draw a picture of what they might save money to purchase. We have had a lot that of pictures of college, clothes, a new house, and even had one draw a picture of a limo ride with Taylor Swift. This year we brought back "Cash the Community Kid" who rode in on a skateboard and encouraged the kids to save. Coincidently Cash who happens to be the president’s son, was also in the original second grade class that we presented this program to 11 years ago.
