City National Bank of West Virginia (Honorable Mention), Cross Lanes, WV

Entry Year: 2017
Entry Category: Volunteerism
Asset Size: Small
Program Name: West Virginia Flood Relief

Program Summary:

On June 23, 2016, more than 10 inches of rain fell in less than 12 hours across some areas of West Virginia, resulting in what meteorologists at the Weather Channel called a “one-in-1,000-year flood.” Homes, schools and businesses were destroyed, and 23 lives were lost in this devastating event. Soon after the water began to recede, the City National Bank team stepped up to the plate to bring aid and relief to victims in the hardest-hit areas.
Through both corporate and employee-led initiatives, City gathered and distributed much needed supplies and monetary donations to relief organizations assisting in affected areas. Employees were offered paid time off to participate in volunteer activities, such as helping rebuild damaged homes and assisting in unloading, organizing and distributing supplies at relief centers. Office space in one of City’s branches was offered to a newly formed long term recovery group at no cost, and a City Regional Retail Manager volunteered to serve on the group’s finance committee. An account was also set up to benefit City employees impacted by the flood, and “jeans days” and other initiatives were enacted to raise funds for this effort.
In addition, City reached out to customers in affected areas with a special loan-deferral program, an unsecured Storm Recovery loan and a special mortgage rehab loan in an effort to provide financial support through the crisis.
City National Bank is a $4 billion regional bank with 85 branches in West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio, employing 850 professionals.
